How to use this checklist
- Run the first stage before you open a blank document. Most weak articles go wrong at the planning step, not the writing step.
- You do not need every check on every page. A short news update needs fewer checks than a long guide; skip what does not apply.
- If you plan articles with a team, fill in our SEO content brief template first. It covers the “Before writing” stage in one document.
Where these checks come from
The checks follow Google’s public guidance for site owners. You can read the original pages here:
- Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content
- Influencing your title links and controlling snippets
- Making links crawlable and image SEO best practices
Some of them are also checks we run on our own blog: looking for statistics without a source, broken internal links, placeholder text, and topics we have already covered. Read how on our editorial team page.
